What is Jolly Phonics? |
Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. Jolly Phonics (JP) helps children with reading, writing, pronunciation, and spelling.It uses the synthetic phonics method of teaching the letter sounds in a way that is fun and multi-sensory. Children learn how to use the letter sounds to read and write words. |
The five basic skills for reading and writing are: 1. Learning the letter sounds |
Parental support is important to all children as they benefit from plenty of praise and encouragement whilst learning. Extra practice will lead to fluency in reading and help your child manage at school. Independent studies find that, after one year's teaching, children taught with JP have an average reading age around 12 months ahead of their actual age. Their spelling age is usually slightly further ahead. Boys typically do as well as girls.

About the classes | ||||||||||
We recommend 45 minute classes for Jolly Phonics (JP). We aim to go through the 40+ sounds in English so this is not a crash course but a long-term course requiring commitment. | ||||||||||
Most school programmes do a year in Jolly
Phonics, learning the 42 sounds in the first 4 months but other areas like
reading, spelling and writing are also worked on together in a
year-long programme. They then go onto Jolly Grammar which builds on Jolly Phonics.
